Rocket 'Terminator' tops Scottish tournament with 9-2 win over dark horse

The 2022 Snooker Scottish Open came to a close with Gary Wilson taking on Joe O'Connor in the final. Gary Wilson, who played well in this year's tournament and beat O'Sullivan, was highly skilled, hitting two breakdowns and three 60+ shots to win his career ranking tournament with a 9-2 thrashing.

The dark horse of the tournament, Joe O'Connor, came back from 2-3 down in the semi-finals to win four games in a row to beat Neil "The Australian Gun" Robertson 6-3 and reach the final of the ranking tournament against Gary Wilson, who knocked out world number one O'Sullivan 4-3 in the second round, and then hit three breakdowns to beat Thailand 6-4 in the semi-finals. Tachaiya, the fast gunner, reached his third ranking final.

The final was a 17-game, 9-win format, with Gary Wilson taking the lead in the first game, blasting a 102 to take the lead. O'Connor came back with a 99 to tie the match at zero in the second game, and then a single 64 in the third before Gary Wilson completed the comeback with a 67 and won the fourth game 88-0 to win 3-1 on aggregate.

After a short break, O'Connor took the chasing game in the fifth. Gary Wilson then continued to take control, scoring a 102-run break in the sixth game, and after riding a winning run in the seventh game, he overturned a 0-44 deficit in the eighth game with a 74-run single to take a 6-2 win in the first period.

In the second stage, Gary Wilson made quick work of the match, winning three more games in a row and a 94 in the 11th game to take the match away with a series of six straight whips at 3-2, ending O'Connor's run as a dark horse at 9-2 on aggregate and winning the ranking title for 18 years in his career, after reaching the finals of the 2015 China Open and 2021 British Open respectively, losing to Selby and Mark Williams.
